Romanian Football on Stamps
World Championships - 2
A set of six stamps and a miniature sheet (below) were issued in commemoration of the World Cup in Munich, West Germany. Romania wasn't qualified there.

Romania could not qualify for the World Cup in Mexico, in 1986. See below the sheet that shows the names of teams it played in the preliminary games (England, N. Ireland, Finland and Turkey).
The sheet dedicated to the World Cup Championship displays the flags of previous winners of this contest.

The sheet for the preliminary games of the World Cup in Italy shows the flag of participants. Romania finished on the first place in this group.
And it finished on the first place in its group in Italy. 2-0 against USSR, 1-2 against Cameroon (in a very strange game) and 1-1 against Argentina (!). The team lost 4-5 on penalties against Ireland. The begin of the great history of the Romania national team.

The greatest Romanian football player of all times was Gheorghe Hagi. He played not only for Steaua Bucharest and the Romanian national team (during 17 years), but also for some of the best European teams from Spain, Italy and Turkey. Here he is shown saying good buy to his fans, after retiring from the national Romanian team, in 2001.
